Hawaiian normal life for some…
1974… The first petroglyph remembered. My brother did things the hard way…there was wood to carve he chose to use a stone a boulder. Carved his pua’a named Red (a dumb boar, untrained) on the surfboard on the Pohaku stone. At the time …I remember trying but it looked as hard as it was trying to make a mark.
1979… as a teen I actually became observant paying attention more. At the culture center, the carving was wow, then I thought about who taught my brother to carve and why would he chizel stone…
My older sisters sent pictures of New Zealand carvings from their visit …they knew I would be inspired.
1981…I still thought about why my brother continue to chizel the rock… I don’t think he was trying to draw maybe he was trying to see if he could crack it but he couldn’t. Have you ever seen a boulder that is part of the mountain trying to carve it …watching my brother. This rock belong to the ranch and it wasn’t budging a dent.
We camped on crown lands at the time it was just the family beach park. Petroglyphs on the rocks, the cave we did not play in ‘Aole.
Years later, for each of the four children I birthed, I carved a stone.
